Taos Chamber Music Group Presents
Taos Chamber Music Group Presents “Elevated Baroque”, the second of two Spring Festival programs, featuring Santa Fe’s MarketMusic on Saturday, May 16, at 5:30 pm and Sunday, May 17, at 3:30 p.m. at the Harwood Museum in Taos, New Mexico.
The Taos Chamber Music Group concludes its 2025-2026 season and Spring Festival with performances by MarketMusic, one of Santa Fe’s premiere Baroque ensembles.
Their program, entitled ‘Elevated Baroque,’ showcases masterworks from the High Baroque, highlighting the richness and expressive range of the period through a compelling mix of instrumental and vocal music. The program features compositions by Bach, Telemann, Vivaldi, Rameau, and Handel, offering audiences a vivid exploration of one of music history’s most dynamic eras.
MarketMusic performs on period instruments, bringing historical authenticity to their interpretations. As co-founder Stephen Redfield explains, “As a period instrument ensemble, we perform this music as the composers themselves would likely have heard it in their day. We play on 18th-century instruments, using gut strings, at low pitch, and with a stylistic approach from the time of the compositions.”
The High Baroque in music lasted from about 1700-1750. This stylistic peak was characterized by extremes of emotion, detail, and complexity, elements also appearing, though a bit earlier, in art and architecture. The movement began in Italy, but spread throughout the continent, especially in Catholic countries.
Performers for this program are Stephen Redfield on Baroque violin, Katie Rietman on Baroque cello, Kim Pineda on Baroque flute and recorder, Kathlene Ritch, soprano, and Kathleen McIntosh on harpsichord.
This final program of the season offers a fitting conclusion to the Taos Chamber Music Group’s Spring Festival, combining historical insight with vibrant, engaging performance.
